Review organizers of the MGC PhD Workshop (Oldenburg, Germany)
Wouter gave us a 1-hour workshop during the MGC PhD workshop in Oldenburg, Germany. We were a group of 120 PhD students from Rotterdam and Leiden, so we all know the feeling of stress and working under pressure. First of all, Wouter brought awareness to our group that it is so important to give attention to your own mental health. He made his workshop very relatable and gave us specific handles to solve certain situations/conflicts or to make them more bearable for ourselves. In the end, it might be true that you cannot change a certain situation, but you can definitely change your own conception/experience of the situation! This was for me the main take-home-message, which I will definitely think about when I encounter a new conflict. Wouter did not only explain concepts and tips, but he also made us write down a couple of important realizations of our own, such that we can use this in the future. All in all, I think Wouter has the perfect point of view and attitude for these kinds of workshops and it is so valuable to be aware of mental health: not only during a PhD, but in almost any position!
Always working and constantly feeling it just isn't enough. I've been in that exhausting hamsterwheel for a long time. It was only when I experienced the effects of mindfulness, coaching, gestalt and other approaches that I began to see how I was getting in my own way. I also noticed how others were trapped in the same way. Slowly but surely I managed to find my own path, became more effective, felt better and spent more time with my family. I was so impressed by these changes that I decided to do everything I could to learn how to offer others what I had missed myself for years.
